Former Turf Moor hero Paul Cook has been lined up as a potential replacement for Sean Dyche at Burnley with his Wigan Athletic side mired in crisis, according to the Daily Star.
A pair of gravel-voiced gaffers are not exactly the type to jump ship at the first sign of struggle but it seems that the futures of Cook and Dyche are intriguingly intertwined.
The Mail claimed recently that Burnley’s long-serving coach could be about to bring his legendary reign at Turf Moor to an end due to growing divisions behind the scenes with chairman Mike Garlick.
Aston Villa and Crystal Palace would love to offer Dyche a fresh start away from Lancashire.
And with things going rather pear-shaped in the most unexpected fashion at Wigan, there is a very real chance that Cook could replace Dyche in the Clarets’ hot seat.
That is according to the Star, who say that the former Portsmouth boss is facing an uncertain future after an in-form Latics side were plunged dramatically into administration, and an unwelcome relegation battle, last week.
Cook showed little interest in taking over at Sunderland when he was linked in late-2019 but Burnley could be a different proposition.
As the 53-year-old Liverpudlian told LancsLive this weekend, he spent his ‘happiest days in football at Burnley’ between 1999 and 2003.
The phrase ‘unfinished business’ comes to mind, then.
