Burnley and Queens Park Rangers are among clubs interested in signing Swindon Town star Scott Twine on a free transfer in the summer transfer window, as reported by The Sun (4 April, page 61).

It was clear from day one this 5ft 9in midfield dynamo had something a bit different.

Speaking in 2018, when Twine was a fresh-faced 18-year-old looking to make a name for himself in the lower leagues, former Swindon boss Phil Brown insisted his twinkle-toed teen was a “special” talent with potential to thrive a few rungs up the footballing ladder.

“I look at a player who is going to blossom, certainly at this club if not at a higher level,” the former Hull City boss said.

“He’s got good technique, a great attitude, good mentality towards hard work and he wants to play up top.

“Tell me what he lacks because I don’t see it. Maybe the physicality but if the likes of (David) Silva, (Lionel) Messi and those little fellas can grace the world stage… I’m not saying (Twine) is at that stage but he’s a slight build and he doesn’t get knocked off the ball.”

Twine may not end up at a Barcelona or Manchester City but he’s certainly on the right track as he looks to make Brown’s prediction come true.

The Sun reports that, with his Swindon contract expiring in three months, Premier League Burnley are battling Championship trio Brentford, Luton Town and QPR for Twine’s signature.

A set-piece specialist with an eye for the spectacular, Twine has produced 12 goals and eight assists this season, shining at League One strugglers Swindon following a superb loan spell at Forest Green in the first half of 2020/21.

It remains to be seen whether the 5ft 9in playmaker can make the step up to the first or second tier. But he certainly deserves a chance to prove he belongs at a higher level.
