The Chronicle claim that midfielder Bruno Guimaraes angered Newcastle teammate Joelinton during the Toon’s 1-0 win over Everton on Wednesday, when Guimaraes had the chance to pass to Joelinton or shoot. He shot, but it went wide.

Newcastle secured another win thanks to Miguel Almiron’s fifth goal of the season, curling a lovely effort past Jordan Pickford. But it was an equal game and played at a high intensity, with both sides having chances to score more goals.

Joelinton had come back into the side beforehand against Manchester United, after being benched against Fulham and Brentford. But he played 90 minutes in the draw with United, and was then hooked at half-time against Everton.

It will be interesting to see if Joelinton starts against Tottenham on Sunday, with Joe Willock, Guimaraes and Sean Longstaff impressing. But Guimaraes did frustrate Joelinton during his Everton display, failing to pass to Joelinton.

“Joelinton is a voice, seen when Bruno Guimaraes fired a shot wide, Joelinton could be seen furiously punching the floor after wanting the pass from his fellow countryman,” The Chronicle reported on Thursday, following the game.

While it is criticism of Newcastle’s fan favourite at the moment, it is unlikely to have any long-term damage. But what it does show, is just how important Joelinton is becoming. How much of a leader he is within the Newcastle ranks.

The rejuvenated star, converted into an 8 from being astriker, is playing some of the best football of his career. Eddie Howe’s positional change has worked wonders for the ex-Hoffenheim star. As his confidence grows, so does his form.

Newcastle will need physicality against a Tottenham side renowned for their counter-attacking speed. Their strength in midfield, too. To nullify the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Newcastle will need grafters. Joelinton has got to start.
