Report: Bruno Alves could need paying off to seal Rangers exit

Glasgow Rangers may have to pay Bruno Alves off if they hope to get him off the Ibrox books this summer.

According to a report from the Daily Record, Bruno Alves could have to be released and receive a pay-off from Rangers if the Gers hope to shift the defender off their books and pave the way for the Portuguese to make a move to Vitoria Guimaraes.

Alves endured a frustrating first season at Ibrox. Seen as a marquee addition during Pedro Caixinha’s tenure, the 36-year-old struggled for opportunities throughout the campaign and often failed to show the form that some of the Light Blues fans would have been expecting from him.

There were some glimpses of sensational quality – the final day free-kick at Easter Road will undoubtedly be a fantastic way to sign off if that game proves to be his final appearance for Rangers – but it appears that he may be on his way out of the club, if Rangers agree to pave the way for a move financially.

The Record reports that Vitoria are keen to sign the centre-back this summer, but there could be issues over his £28,000-a-week wages, while Rangers demanding a transfer fee would also prove to be a stumbling block.

The Record suggests if that Rangers want to let Alves go this summer they may have to release him from his contract one year early and include a payment that accounts for the drop in salary that would come with a move to Vitoria.

Alves may not have proved to be the signing that the fans were hoping for, but he did show some glimpses of real class during his first year in the Scottish Premiership, and that should leave Rangers really wondering whether it is worth offering to release him.

If incoming boss Steven Gerrard has big plans to bolster his defensive ranks this summer then the additional wages may come in handy, but perhaps it would be worth only letting him go if a side is willing to pay to make a move happen.
