Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce would ‘love’ to sign Billy Gilmour from Chelsea this summer, the Daily Mail suggest.
Gilmour is highly regarded at Chelsea, but he has struggled to break into Thomas Tuchel’s team.
Newcastle are now eyeing up a potential deal, which would surely be a loan on an initial basis.
Bruce is believed to be behind Newcastle’s push for Gilmour, with the Mail claiming he would take great joy in landing the midfielder.
Whether a deal will be possible remains to be seen, but Chelsea surely will feel that the 19-year-old’s development could be well served by a season of playing regularly in the Premier League.
Newcastle have seen the benefit of the loan system this term, as Joe Willock has come in and impressed so much.
If Gilmour could have a similar impact next season then he would be a great signing, although he is a different player to Willock.
Gilmour thrives playing in front of the defence, where his ball-playing ability can shine.
The youngster has already earned a big reputation for himself, with Roy Keane a big fan of his talents.
“He had everything, it was one of the best performances I have seen in a long, long time,” the Sky Sports pundit said after Gilmour impressed for Chelsea against Liverpool last season.
“Just his general play I thought it was like a world class player. That’s what he looked like straight away.”
Gilmour’s reputation could soar further this summer, as he is part of the Scotland squad at Euro 2020.
