According to The Athletic, Newcastle United are pursuing a loan deal for Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo.
It’s claimed that Steve Bruce wants to sign a centre back who can also cover at left back if needed, and Rojo is one of his top targets.
Sheffield United are also thought to be interested in Rojo, but Newcastle now pose a major threat to the Blades in the race for his signature.
Newcastle want a loan deal, which is somewhat complicated by the fact that Rojo is out of contract at the end of the season.
United do have a 12-month option on his contract, so it will be fascinating to see how Newcastle can attempt to pull off a deal in January.
The Argentinian is out of favour at United and hasn’t even played a competitive game this season, with Rojo desperate to go and play elsewhere.

Newcastle can offer a home to the 30-year-old, and Bruce may hope that his ties to United can help secure his signature.
Bruce does already have a naturally left-footed centre back in Ciaran Clark, but Rojo’s ability to play at left back is what is really appealing, offering additional cover behind Jamal Lewis if Newcastle can get a deal done.
