Newcastle United are reportedly keen on Nottingham Forest defender Joe Worrall.
According to The Sun, Newcastle United are pursuing a January deal for Nottingham Forest defender Joe Worrall – but something doesn’t quite add up.
The Magpies beat Manchester United 1-0 on Sunday afternoon to secure a first home win of the season, and the clean sheet will have been a great boost to Steve Bruce too, having leaked five at Leicester City.
Still, Newcastle are in the market for another defender, and it’s believed that Bruce now wants to bring Forest centre back Worrall to St James’ Park.
The report claims that Worrall is out of contract at the end of the season, so Bruce thinks Newcastle can sign him in a cut-price deal in the January transfer window.
However, that plan doesn’t really make sense. Worrall actually signed a new four-and-a-half year deal in October 2017, meaning he’s actually contracted until 2022.
Forest are under no pressure to sell Worrall, and with Sabri Lamouchi masterminding a potential promotion push, it will be hard to get the 22-year-old out of the City Ground, never mind on the cheap.
Bruce may well still be keen on Worrall, as Fabian Schar will be attracting interest, whilst Federico Fernandez is out of contract at the end of the season.
A number of Forest youth products have joined Newcastle from Forest in the past, such as Jermaine Jenas, Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles, but it’s hard to see Bruce landing Worrall as things stand.
