Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce was working on a deal to sign Hamza Choudhury last night, the Telegraph say in their live blog (9:16)am.
Newcastle have been chasing Choudhury for much of the month so far, and are still keen on the Leicester City midfielder.
But Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers told Bruce last night that he needed to sleep on the decision, before making a final call.
Choudhury would be willing to join Newcastle, it seems, but Leicester are reluctant to let him leave without securing another addition.

The Foxes want a more attacking central midfielder before accepting to any deal with Newcastle.
If the Magpies were to land Choudhury it would be on loan, and he could add fresh drive and energy into their midfield ranks.
Newcastle have really struggled for results of late, and even a win over Everton at the weekend has not put Bruce off making additions to his squad this month.
