Andy Carroll could still have a big role to play In Newcastle United’s season with head coach Steve Bruce thrilled about the striker’s performances since the recent return to training, according to The Mirror (3 June, page 51).
A Geordie striker who made an emotional return to where it all began last summer, Carroll is desperate to ensure his homecoming is more than just a flying visit.
The injury-hit 31-year-old has is set to become a free agent at the end of the season and once again finds himself playing for his future.
But if Carroll is hoping to be handed fresh terms by his boyhood club, and the Mirror says he is, then the former England international is certainly going about things in the right way.
The report claim that Carroll has been performing like a caged bear in training, leaving Bruce and the rest of the Magpies coaching staff delighted.

Bruce is now planning to hand the former Liverpool targetman a big role once ‘Project Re-start’ gets underway.
The Tyneside giants still need a few more points to guarantee their survival, while an FA Cup final place is still on the cards.
Carroll, who had been restricted to just four Premier League starts all season, did appear to have played his final game in Newcastle colours thanks to yet another serious injury problem. But if there is anyone who has benefitted from the season’s three-month pause, it is him.
And who can begrudge this luckless striker a bit of good fortune?
