Aston Villa are reportedly set to sign Lovre Kalinic.

Croatia's goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic takes part in a training session in Deauville, on June 10, 2016, ahead of the the Euro 2016 football tournament.

According to Sky Sports, Aston Villa almost signed Lovre Kalinic under Steve Bruce earlier this year, but couldn’t land him after missing out on promotion.

The January transfer window is still a couple of weeks away from opening, but Villa are all set to land their first signing of 2019 already.

The Telegraph report that Gent star Kalinic has been undergoing a medical with Villa today ahead of a £7million move to Villa Park, marking a major coup.

Kalinic, 28, is a giant shot stopper at 6ft 7in tall, and comes with real credentials having emerged as Croatia’s first-choice goalkeeper since the World Cup.

Kalinic looks to be a major signing for Villa, and comes more than three years since Tim Sherwood and co attempted to sign him, but failed on work permit grounds.

Now, Sky Sports report that Villa were close to signing Kalinic under Steve Bruce earlier this year, but couldn’t get a deal done after missing out on promotion.

Villa were in financial crisis after their Championship play-off final defeat, and seemingly couldn’t afford to lure him away from Gent before ending up with Andre Moreira and Orjan Nyland.

Neither have impressed, and after Bruce couldn’t sign Kalinic, it seems that successor Dean Smith is all set to do the deal now.
