Report: Brighton join Newcastle & Tottenham in Santiago Gimenez race

Brighton & Hove Albion have reportedly joined the race to sign Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez, with Newcastle United and Tottenham also chasing the Mexican attacker.

According to TV Azteca, the Seagulls have entered the competition to land the 21-year-old forward, this season is enjoying an ‘outstanding’ debut year in the Netherlands with Feyenoord, who currently top of the Eredivisie table and this week take on AS Roma in the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals.

With 18 goals in all competitions, Gimenez’s form has already caught the eye of many big clubs around Europe, though the Premier League could be the Mexican international’s next destination, with Newcastle and Tottenham both recently being linked with the youngster.

However, Brighton could now provide some strong competition for the English duo, with the Seagulls establishing themselves as arguably the best club in the Premier League for a young player to ply their trade at, with the likes of Evan Ferguson and Moises Caicedo flourishing this season.

Indeed, Gimenez could be an excellent signing for Brighton, who have lacked a quality striker for the good part of a few seasons, and with the Seagulls in the driving seat to claim a European spot, Roberto De Zerbi’s side could have the pulling power to sign the Feyenoord man.

However, with Newcastle and Tottenham battling it out for top-four and Gimenez’s form more than guaranteeing a starting spot for a club of this stature, the Mexican could easily reject a move to Brighton for a more immediate transfer to the top of the Premier League.

Gimenez’s form has been nothing short of incredible this season, yet for Brighton, the south coasters will have to do everything in their power to beat the likes of Newcastle and Tottenham to the Mexican’s signature, which could develop into one of the biggest transfer battles of the entire summer.

As stated, Gimenez has been in great form for Feyenoord this season in what has been his first year in Europe, and with the Rotterdam-based club on course for the league title, the 21-year-old could find himself as the most in-demand player from the entire squad, much to Brighton’s dismay.
