It appears that Liverpool would rather send Joe Gomez on loan to a Premier League club rather than allow a reunion with Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.

The prospect of linking up with Brendan Rodgers two years after he was given the boot by Liverpool would surely appeal to Reds defender Joe Gomez.

After all, the Northern Irishman showed an incredible amount of faith not just to part with £3.5 million to lure the 18-year-old from Charlton Athletic after just 24 senior appearances (BBC). And the fact that Rodgers started him in a Merseyside derby against Everton just a few weeks later spoke volumes about how highly he rated the classy centre-half.

Therefore, it’s no surprise that Rodgers’ current club, Celtic, are interested in signing Gomez this summer, as reported by The Sun.

The report claims that Premier League duo Bournemouth and Brighton are also tracking the 20-year-old, the former hoping to sign him permanently for £10 million.

Gomez was ruled out for well over a year with a cruciate ligament injury almost immediately after Rodgers was replaced by Jurgen Klopp at Anfield in October 2015. And, since returning to fitness, he has only played three games under the German – all in the FA Cup.

Consequently, it appears that Liverpool may be willing to part company with Gomez this summer. Yet, while Gomez may be tempted to reunite with Rodgers at Parkhead, that decision may be taken out of his hands.

Because The Argus claims that Brighton have the advantage as Liverpool would prefer that the London-born defender is loaned out to a club in the Premier League next season. This would suggest that they do indeed see Gomez as an important part of their plans going forward.

And it would also suggest that Celtic, and Rodgers, may be left disappointed.
