Report: Brighton eyeing move for Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic

Brighton and Hove Albion are considering making a move for Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

According to a report from The Sun, Brighton are interested in signing Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic when the transfer window opens, and it appears that Rafa Benitez may not stand in the forward’s way.

Mitrovic has endured a mixed time at St James’ Park, struggling to establish himself as a regular starter in the side and shake off the image of being hot-headed, having picked up a couple of red cards during his time on Tyneside.

He has recently served a suspension for elbowing West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini, and The Sun reports that Benitez is now ready to cash in on the 23-year-old, who did score in his one Premier League appearance of the season to date.

The Sun reports that Brighton are considering being the ones to take Mitrovic off Newcastle’s hands, with the Seagulls watching the former Anderlecht man play for Serbia in their recent World Cup qualifier.

The Sun adds that former Magpies boss Chris Hughton is desperate to strengthen his attacking options after a frustrating end to the window, so perhaps Mitrovic’s experience coupled with Newcastle’s willingness to offload him has influenced their interest.

When he has been available, Mitrovic’s record in the top flight is not too bad at all, with his strike against West Ham this season being his 10th goal in 35 Premier League games for the Magpies.

And Hughton may feel that if he can keep the forward on the right path, he can lead Brighton to safety in their first Premier League campaign.

Newcastle fans meanwhile, will be hoping that any sale of Mitrovic leads to another forward coming in in January as they have few options already so letting another go could prove a gamble if he is not replaced.
