The Villa shot stopper has been sent a ‘clear message’ by the club’s bid for Stoke City’s no.1.
Brad Guzan is heading for the exit door at Aston Villa this summer after the club made a £5 million bid for Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, according to the Mirror.
Indeed, their report claims the American has been sent a ‘clear message’ by the offer, as the Villa man will become third-choice at the club should any move go ahead.
The Mirror suggest Aston Villa tried to send Shay Given out on loan, who has a year left on his contract, but found no takers – meaning Guzan will now be the fall guy at the Midlands club.
| Appearances | Minutes Played | |
|---|---|---|
| Gabriel Agbonlahor | 34 | 2,693 |
| Brad Guzan | 34 | 3,060 |
| Tom Cleverley | 31 | 2,520 |
| Andreas Weimann | 31 | 1,777 |
| Alan Hutton | 30 | 2,417 |
As Opta stats show, Guzan made the joint-most appearances for Aston Villa in the Premier League last season. In terms of minutes, however, the goalkeeper played far more than forward Gabriel Agbonlahor.
Crucially, though, the American was dropped towards the end of the season as Given replaced him as Tim Sherwood’s first choice.
And, if Villa are indeed in the market for a new shot stopper, Guzan’s future at the club certainly looks bleak. Where could he go if he does leave? Could there perhaps be a few offers from the USA…?
