Celtic will reportedly have to see off Premier League competition if they hope to sign David Turnbull this summer.
According to a report from the Daily Record, Celtic will have to battle Bournemouth as well as a host of Championship clubs in England if they hope to sign David Turnbull from Motherwell.
The Daily Record reports that the Hoops and Barnsley have had bids rejected for the £3 million-rated midfielder, and there are now a number of clubs also involved in the race, with Derby County, Bristol City and Wigan Athletic also interested.
But perhaps most worryingly for Celtic, the Record reports that the Cherries are admirers of the Well star, who scored nine goals and contributed five assists in the Scottish Premiership this past season.
Eddie Howe’s men have not been afraid to spend big money on transfer targets since their promotion to the Premier League, so they will be confident that they will be able to match or better any bids that any of their rivals end up making for Turnbull this summer.
The situation is quite reminiscent of the transfer saga involving John McGinn 12 months ago, with Celtic losing out to Aston Villa in the race to sign the midfielder from Hibernian.
The Bhoys would rue not signing McGinn as he proved to be a revelation in the Championship to help Villa secure promotion to the top flight. It will be interesting to see whether that disappointment influences how hard Celtic work to get Turnbull through the door, with English sides well aware of the 19-year-old’s potential.
