Middlesbrough and Sheffield United are preparing to go head-to-head to sign Martyn Waghorn, reports the East Anglian Daily Times, with Ipswich Town wanting £8million.

Derby County had also shown interest in Waghorn, but after their failure to sell Matej Vydra they have now pulled out of the race.

Boro have a space to fill in attack following Patrick Bamford’s £7million switch to Leeds United and have been considered the favourites to land the Ipswich forward.

However, the Blades are not out of the running but as yet no side has been prepared to meet the valuation the Tractor Boys have placed on Waghorn.

Bids of around £5million have been rejected and manager Paul Hurst says the club’s stance will not change until that £8million valuation is met.

Hurst did also hint that any incoming transfers to Portman Road could depend on Waghorn being sold, describing the situation as a “domino effect”.
