Transfer merry-go-rounds are common when the summer window opens, and both Everton and Tottenham Hotspur could find themselves at the heart of one.

It all surrounds the future of Espanyol striker Borja Iglesias. The 26-year-old hit 20 goals last season, thriving after his move from Celta Vigo whilst attracting major interest in the process.

Marca claimed in January that Iglesias had rejected a move to Everton, but speculation of a move to the Toffees hasn’t exactly died down since then.

Estadio Deportivo report that Everton are willing to pay the €28million (£25million) release clause in his contract, but Iglesias prefers to stay in La Liga.

That’s where Real Betis come into the picture. They’ve just appointed Rubi, the man who coached Iglesias at Espanyol, and unsurprisingly wants to reunite with the target man, even with Everton describes as the ‘main threat’.

The problem for Betis is that they’re trying creative ways to sign Iglesias. Huge sell-on clauses and potential players included in the deal are being discussed, because Betis can’t afford that buyout.

One way they would be able to afford the deal though, as noted by Marca, is by selling a star player, such as Tottenham Hotspur target Giovani Lo Celso, with Mauricio Pochettino ‘determined’ to sign him according to Estadio Deportivo.

Joan Francesc Ferrer Rubi adresses the media after being anounced as new Real Betis head coach at Ciudad Deportiva Luis del Solon June 12, 2019 in Seville, Spain.

Betis are demanding huge money for their creative midfielder, who hit 16 goals last season, and they’ll know that raking in £60million or more would present them with the chance to land Iglesias.

This appears to be a situation waiting to kick off. If Spurs can’t land Lo Celso, Betis may not be able to afford Iglesias, potentially pushing him closer to Goodison Park, so the situation does appear to hinge on Tottenham’s talks for Lo Celso.

That’s a real domino effect that we often see in the transfer market, and whilst Spurs will be focusing on themselves in their pursuit of Lo Celso, it could inadvertently ruin Everton’s plans of signing Iglesias.
