Bordeaux are reportedly keen on Aston Villa left back Jordan Amavi, because Newcastle and Sunderland want Maxime Poundje.

According to SFR Sport, Bordeaux want to sign Aston Villa left back Jordan Amavi – because Newcastle and Sunderland are keen on Maxime Poundje.

Amavi, 22, was a big signing for Villa when he left French side Nice for the Midlands in the summer of 2015, and he impressed in his first 12 appearances before disaster hit the left back.

The Frenchman suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury in his knee back in November 2015, and missed the rest of last season as Villa were relegated from the Premier League to the Championship.

This term, Amavi has started 11 games having finally established himself as a key player under Steve Bruce, but his performance appear to be attracting interest.

SFR Sport in France report that Bordeaux manager Jocelyn Gourvennec wants to bring Amavi to the club on loan during the January transfer window, as he’s preparing to move for a new left back.

Not only is former Bayern Munich left back Diego Contento believed to be angling for a move to Italy next month, but it’s stated that interest in Amavi is being driven due to major interest in Bordeaux left back Maxime Poundje.

It’s stated that Crystal Palace, Newcastle and Sunderland are all interested in signing 24-year-old defender Poundje in January, despite the fact that he’s currently out injured.

Poundje has spent his entire career with hometown club Bordeaux, but the former France Under-19 international is now wanted in England – and should Newcastle, Sunderland or Palace manage to land him in January, Bordeaux could make a move to land Amavi as his replacement.

Newcastle do have Paul Dummett and Achraf Lazaar at their disposal at left back, but with Lazaar struggling for first-team football, Benitez may look to completely overhaul the position by bringing in Poundje, whilst Sunderland could look to bring him in as cover for Patrick van Aanholt.

Palace appear to have the biggest need for a left back, as Pape Souare’s future is in some doubt after suffering a major injury in a car crash earlier this season, with manager Alan Pardew potentially in the market for a new left back in January – and Poundje fits the bill.
