Bojan Krkic reportedly snubbed interest from Celtic in order to join Mainz.

According to the Stoke Sentinel, Celtic attempted to take Stoke City forward Bojan Krkic on loan – but he instead chose to join Bundesliga side Mainz.

Bojan, 26, decided to join German outfit Mainz earlier today, penning a loan deal until the end of the season having found it difficult to nail down a regular first-team spot under Mark Hughes.

The Spaniard, who joined Stoke from Barcelona back in 2014, and became a popular figure with Potters fans having hit 11 goals and two assists in his first two seasons with the club.

Bojan struggled for first-team football this season though, starting just five Premier League games – though he does have three league goals to his name this term.

Now, the playmaker-cum-forward is heading to Germany with Mainz, but the Stoke Sentinel disclose details of a fierce race to sign him, with Celtic allegedly snubbed in the process of his move.

It’s claimed that, with Celtic looking for additions, manager Brendan Rodgers had hoped to land Bojan on loan until the end of the season, but missed out on his signature earlier today.

The report even adds that Rodgers hoped to persuade Bojan into a move by telling him that he could become something of a hero in Glasgow, but it clearly wasn’t enough to tempt Bojan into a move north o the border.

Premier League sides Middlesbrough and Watford also failed in moves for Bojan, as well as Celta Vigo, Espanyol, Las Palmas and Malaga, with the attacker seemingly keen to test himself in Germany for the first time.
