According to The Independent, Boca Juniors are begging midfielder Wilmar Barrios to postpone a move to Tottenham Hotspur until the January transfer window.

Barrios, 24, has been a regular for Boca since a 2016 move from Deportes Tolima in his native Colombia, impressing with his combative nature in holding midfield for the Argentinian side.

Barrios’ performance have now not only earned him a spot in Colombia’s World Cup squad – potentially giving him a chance to shine against Japan on Tuesday – but also earned him major interest.

Colombian media outlet Antena2 reported on Friday that Tottenham are pushing to sign Barrios, and a move may be ready to confirm in the coming days as Mauricio Pochettino has specifically asked for his signature.

However, The Independent report that Boca are now desperately attempting to convince Barrios to delay a move to Spurs, and want him to wait until the January transfer window to make his switch to England.

Boca wanted Barrios to sign a new deal before the World Cup, but with a £14.5million release clause in his contract, the Buenos Aires giants risk losing the midfielder during the tournament.

Barrios is wanted to play in the Copa Libertadores for Boca this year, and a move to Tottenham now would deprive Guillermo Barros Schelotto of one of his key players, meaning it’s like surprise that Boca want to keep him for a few more months.

It remains to be seen whether Barrios will choose to stay, but a move to the Premier League would be hugely appealing as rumours with Tottenham continue to surrounding the midfielder.
