Sheffield United met Charlton’s asking price for Ricky Holmes, only for them to raise it at the last minute.

Sheffield United actually met Charlton Athletic’s asking price for Ricky Holmes and yet still could not complete a deal for the forward, reports the Sheffield Star.

It is believed that the Addicks originally wanted in the region of £400,000 for Holmes, which the Blades met with a second bid after having their first was rejected – according to Kent Live.

However, after coughing up the money, Charlton then decided they wanted more for the 30-year-old and subsequently turned down the second offer as well.

Holmes has since signed a new three-year contract at the Valley and manager Karl Robinson told the club’s official website in the wake of the new deal that the winger was “not for sale”.

While rumours linking United with a move for the former Northampton man have not disappeared completely, it is thought that boss Chris Wilder has now turned his attention elsewhere as he looks for attacking recruitment at Bramall Lane.

The Yorkshire club are still continuing negotiations to try and sign Southend United midfielder Ryan Leonard and Ethan Ebanks-Landell from Wolverhampton Wanderers, though.
