Birmingham City have launched a bid to sign Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan, according to Sky Sports (12:07).

However, it is claimed the Blues have been told the former Aston Villa man is not for sale.

Hull City are previously said to have been knocked back in an approach for Bannan, who has two years left on his contract at Hillsborough.

And the Tigers have since turned to Jon Toral and Jackson Irvine after selling Sam Clucas to Swansea City for around £15 million.

Despite Wednesday’s slow start to the season, Bannan has been in fine form for Carlos Carvalhal’s side who appear determined to keep him even though their own transfer plans have been restricted by the Football League’s financial fair play rules.

The Scotland international began his career on the other side of Birmingham with Villa, and is still thought to live in the area.

According to The Mirror (07:14), Harry Redknapp’s side have beaten Wednesday and Leeds United to the signing of Brentford defender Harlee Dean.

However, HITC Sport understands that claim is somewhat wide of the mark, with the Owls close to signing Heerenveen’s Joost van Aken instead.
