Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa wants to offer Gaetano Berardi a coaching contract at Elland Road, the Daily Mirror report.

Berardi has suffered a knee injury which is set to keep him out for the season.

The Swiss international, who Bielsa described as ‘very important’ to Leeds Live, had been a key player in Leeds’ promotion, but his knee problem means that he will play no part in his side’s first season back in the top flight.

Berardi’s future actually came into doubt over the summer, as his contract expired at the end of last campaign.

But Leeds have handed him a one-year extension while he receives treatment and now Bielsa sees the 32-year-old playing a new role.

He has decided that he would like to add Berardi to his coaching team at Elland Road, as he feels Leeds’ squad could learn a lot from his advice and guidance.

Whether Berardi will take the role up still remains to be seen, as he may well want to try to continue his playing career after coming back from injury.

But Leeds fans are likely to be delighted to hear that Berardi is being offered the chance to stick around at Elland Road, given his popularity around the club.
