According to The Mirror, Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez wants a written guarantee from owner Mike Ashley about his summer transfer budget and his power on decision making.
The Magpies have managed to stay in the Premier League in their first season back in the top flight, with Benitez managing to work wonders with his side.
January additions such as Martin Dubravka and Kenedy made a big impact, but it’s imperative that Newcastle now kick on this summer, and don’t make a slow start to the transfer window like last summer.
Newcastle’s first new arrival wasn’t secured until the 4th of July last summer as Florian Lejeune arrived, and Benitez was frustrated at missing out on targets such as Willy Caballero and Tammy Abraham.
Now, The Mirror report that Benitez will actually seek written guarantees from owner Mike Ashley and co about his transfer funds, and the amount of power he will be given in the transfer market.
Benitez felt let down last summer after reaching a verbal agreement, and will this time seek stronger commitment from the Newcastle board in his quest for new signings.
With rumours of a return to Napoli swirling, Newcastle need to ensure that Benitez is backed in the transfer market with his top targets – or risk losing the Spaniard, who has been the most impressive Magpies manager in recent memory.
