Newcastle United need a number of new signings this summer.
According to The Northern Echo, Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez is seeking an update on transfers from managing director Lee Charnley early this week.
The Magpies ended the season well and clinched a top half finish in their first season back in the Premier League, with January signings Martin Dubravka and Kenedy both impressing.
Manager Benitez needs further backing this summer though in order to kick the club on, and after a slow start to the last three transfer windows, the Spaniard unsurprisingly wants quicker activity this time, with a permanent deal for Dubravka already secured.
Now, The Northern Echo report that Benitez wants an update from managing director Lee Charnley early this week, in order to gauge how close Newcastle are to making new signings.
It’s claimed that Benitez wants a defender, midfielder, winger and striker in order to boost his squad, and one striker appears to be emerging from the pack for the Magpies.
The report states that Newcastle are strongly considering a bid for West Bromwich Albion striker Salomon Rondon, given that he has a £16million release clause in his contract following relegation to the Championship.
Rondon, 28, joined West Brom from Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg in 2015, and hit 28 goals in 119 total appearances for the Baggies, and averaged eight goals a season in the Premier League.
The Venezuelan international could be the physical centre forward Newcastle wanted January signing Islam Slimani to be – and Benitez may want the Magpies to push for a deal for Rondon in the near future.
