Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez is reportedly keen on signing midfielder Frank Lampard.

According to The Express, Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez is targeting a reunion with midfielder Frank Lampard having worked with him at Chelsea.
Lampard, 38, confirmed that he is leaving Major League Soccer side New York City FC, after scoring 15 goals in 30 games for Patrick Vieira’s side.
The expectation is that Lampard will now return to England, and whilst Crystal Palace are evens favourites (Oddschecker) to sign the midfielder – who hit 211 goals in 648 games for Chelsea – there appears to be further interest in Lampard’s signature.
The Express report that Lampard has interest from two Championship clubs, with Brighton and Hove Albion as well as Newcastle United keen to sign him – but only if they win promotion to the Premier League.

Newcastle currently sit top of the Championship table ahead of today’s trip to Leeds United, and a win would leave them five points clear of second placed Brighton.
It’s now suggested that either side could move for Lampard if they do go up to the Premier League, as respective managers Rafael Benitez and Chris Hughton believe his experience would be invaluable.

Benitez may have the upper hand in the race though, as he worked with Lampard at Chelsea, and the opportunity to reunite at Newcastle could be appealing to the England and Premier League legend.
Brighton’s advantage would be offering Romford-born Lampard a return to the south of England, which may be something Lampard and his family have to think about when deciding the midfielder’s next move as he considers life as a free agent.
