Newcastle United are reportedly stepping up their interest in Liverpool’s Danny Ings.

Danny Ings of Liverpool speaks with Jurgen Klopp, Manager of Liverpool during the Premier League match between Liverpool and Everton at Anfield on December 10, 2017 in Liverpool, England.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United are expected to ramp up their efforts to sign Liverpool striker Danny Ings early in the January transfer window, whilst Aleksandar Mitrovic could be heading to the Championship.

The Magpies lost 1-0 at Arsenal on Saturday afternoon, meaning it’s now eight defeats in the last nine games for Newcastle, with just one point picked up in that run.

Rafael Benitez’s men now sit in the relegation zone, and are in desperate need of reinforcements in January, with another striker almost certainly needed in order to find a regular source of goals.

The Chronicle report that Newcastle boss Benitez wants to secure a swift deal for Liverpool striker Danny Ings in January, in the hope of beating West Brom and West Ham to his signature.

Ings, 25, is looking for first-team football as he returns from his second major knee injury, and looks set to leave Anfield on loan in January given that he is behind the likes of Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge and even Dominic Solanke.

Newcastle now want to bring Ings to Tyneside, pressing ahead with a quick move to seal his signature as Benitez eyes the former Burnley man – who hit 11 Premier League goals in the 2014-15 campaign – to spearhead his attack.

The report also notes that Newcastle forward Aleksandar Mitrovic looks set to leave in January, with Championship clubs understood to be keen, as well as his former club Partizan Belgrade.

Mitrovic has yet to start a Premier League game this season despite Newcastle’s goalscoring problems, but whether he would be open to dropping back down to the Championship remains to be seen.
