According to The Mirror, Newcastle United are set to make a new move to sign Fulham playmaker Tom Cairney this summer once their promotion is confirmed.
The Magpies can seal promotion to the Premier League this evening with a home win over Preston North End, and fans will be keen to see some major signings arrive at St. James’ Park.
Manager Rafael Benitez was left frustrated by Newcastle’s inability to bring in new additions in January, and he could renew his interest in one of his targets from a matter of months ago.
The Mirror report that Benitez wanted to land Fulham playmaker Tom Cairney in January, but having missed out then, he’s now ready to resurrect his interest at the end of the season.
Cairney, 26, started his career in the youth setup at Leeds United before spells with Hull City and Blackburn Rovers, eventually joining Fulham in the summer of 2015.
This term, the Scotland international has been Slavisa Jokanovic’s key man at Craven Cottage, racking up 11 goals and ten assists in 43 Championship appearances – including a superb long-range strike against Newcastle at St. James’ Park.

Technically sound with a superb left foot, Cairney has proven that he can both create and score, with Newcastle allegedly sending scouts to watch him in action against Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon; a game in which Fulham won 4-1 with Cairney scored.
However, that win means that Fulham are right in the mix for a play-off place, and promotion to the Premier League themselves could mean that the Cottagers keep hold of their star man and fan favourite rather than sell him to Newcastle, with Benitez looking to finally land his man.
