According to a report from the Chronicle, Rafa Benitez is keen for Newcastle to get at least two signings in before the end of the first fortnight of the January transfer window.

After their three-game winning run came to an emphatic end at home to West Ham on Saturday, the Magpies have been reminded how important the January window is going to be for their season.

The Chronicle reports that Benitez was left frustrated with how slowly Newcastle got going during the previous winter window, and is targeting a much faster start this time around.

The report suggests that the Spaniard wants at least two signings within the first two weeks, with a full-back, winger and a striker thought to be on the club’s shopping list.

The loss to West Ham would have quashed Newcastle’s momentum, but perhaps it may prove to be exactly what Benitez needed to prove a point to those who will decide how much money he has to spend next month.

Had their winning run continued, the Magpies board may have been tempted to shelve any plans to free up significant funds. The 3-0 defeat against the Hammers however, makes it clear that this squad needs improving when the window opens.
