Newcastle United are allegedly focusing on strengthening their strike force for now, despite links with the Icelandic midfielder.

According to a report from the Chronicle, Newcastle United have no plans to bid for Swansea City play-maker Gylfi Sigurdsson this summer, with manager Rafa Benitez prioritising new strikers if, as expected, they return to the top flight.
The Magpies have reportedly begun to make plans for their summer transfer business, but it seems suggestions that Sigurdsson is their prime target are wide of the mark.
As stated by the Chronicle, Newcastle are instead looking to add more out-and-out fire power to their squad, after having an over reliance on Dwight Gayle this season.
The former Crystal Palace man has been in blistering form, however his injury absence painted a stark picture of the back-up options at St. James’ Park, with Aleksandar Mitrovic still struggling for form and Daryl Murphy only recently coming back into contention.
Sigurdsson would be a superb addition to Newcastle’s squad but for now it seems Benitez is focusing on the players he wants on the end of great deliveries, not the great deliverer himself.
The report goes on to claim that Newcastle would have to fork out a huge sum for Sigurdsson, which seems highly unlikely at this stage.
