According to Tutto Mercato Web, Newcastle United are interested in a summer deal for Inter Milan goalkeeper Ionut Radu – but the Serie A giants intend to keep him.

The Magpies clinched promotion back to the Premier League on Monday evening, beating Preston North End 4-1 at St. James’ Park thanks to two goals from Ayoze Perez as well as strikes from Christian Atsu and Matt Ritchie.

Now, with promotion secured, Newcastle fans will be wondering just who Rafael Benitez could sign to boost his squad – and he is being linked with a surprise raid on one of his former clubs.

Tutto Mercato Web report that Newcastle are battling Cagliari for the signature of Inter Milan goalkeeper Ionut Radu, with Benitez seemingly looking to snap up the Romanian in a surprise move.

Radu, 19, has made just one first-team appearance for Inter, and has mostly served as cover for both Samir Handanovic and Juan Pablo Carrizo so far.

The teenager may want more first-team football sooner rather than later, and it’s believed that Newcastle are now vying with Cagliari for his signature this summer.

However, Inter are believed to be keen on keeping Radu at the San Siro, with the Serie A giants allegedly keen to develop him behind Handanovic as their second-choice stopper next season.

Newcastle’s alleged interest comes at a particularly interesting time given that Benitez made the major decision to drop first-choice goalkeeper Karl Darlow against Preston on Monday, starting Rob Elliot instead.

With Matz Sels also in the mix, Newcastle have a number of goalkeepers at the club, but whether Benitez trusts any of them in the Premier League remains to be seen – and a move for Radu could suggest that he isn’t totally sold on his options between the sticks.
