Newcastle United continue to be linked with a move for SPAL defender Francesco Vicari.

According to Sport Mediaset in Italy, Rafael Benitez is convinced about a January move for SPAL defender Francesco Vicari – and Newcastle scouts will have him watched in the coming weeks.
The Magpies remain without a win in any competition this season, and the key problem has been a lack of goals, with just six goals in nine games – only Crystal Palace and Huddersfield Town have scored fewer.
Many are expecting attacking additions in the January transfer window, but it seems that Benitez may actually have his sights set on adding yet another defender to his ranks.
Sport Mediaset in Italy report that Newcastle boss Benitez has been ‘convinced’ by SPAL centre back Vicari, and is interested in signing him in January.
Newcastle’s scouts are now set to watch Vicari over the coming weeks and months ahead of potentially launching a move in January, with Benitez far from the only man having an input.
Vicari, 24, has starred for Serie A side SPAL since signing from Novara in 2016, becoming one of Serie A’s most underrated centre backs in the process.

Vicari may well be on the move in 2019, but Newcastle looking to make any sort of move would raise questions about the centre backs currently at Benitez’s disposal.
Clubs are bound to be interested in Jamaal Lascelles, whilst Sevilla wanted Florian Lejeune over the summer. Fabian Schar and Federico Fernandez should be relatively safe after only arriving in the summer, but a move for Vicari may spell the end for Ciaran Clark, with the Irishman most at risk.
