Lage spent three years in English football with Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City and is said to have been a contender for the recent vacancy at Aston Villa.

The former Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City coach Bruno Lage – who was linked with the recent vacancy at Aston Villa – will replace Rui Vitoria as manager of Benfica on an interim basis, according to A Bola.

The website claims Vitoria has left Benfica after a run of just two wins in seven matches, although the news has yet to be officially confirmed by the Portuguese club.

And Lage is said to be the man tasked with arresting that bad run, after managing the Eagles’ B team since the start of this season.

The 42-year-old followed Carlos Carvalhal to Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City, and according to the Telegraph made a positive impression on Aston Villa, who sought talks with him before Dean Smith’s October arrival.

He has around 20 years’ coaching experience, having never played professional football.

Would the former Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City coach have been a good appointment for Aston Villa?
