Report: Benfica line up replacement for Newcastle target Odysseas Vlachodimon

According to A Bola, Benfica have made Ponte Preta’s Ivan their main target in case they lose reported Newcastle United target Odysseas Vlachodimos this summer.

The Benfica shot-stopper has been linked with a move away from the club.

A Bola reported in May how Newcastle were keen, with the Magpies identifying Vlachodimos as an ideal potential signing to bolster their goalkeeper options.

The Greece international has drawn comparisons with Ederson and Jan Oblak.

His release clause at Benfica is £53 million. However, despite the whopping fee, the Portuguese side are taking no chances as they identify a replacement in case of a sale.

Newcastle’s planned summer spending spree has been halted by the failed takeover bid.

The Magpies were in the midst of a takeover involving Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund. It could have made them an elite force in the Premier League.

The takeover, however, failed to materialise leaving Newcastle fans frustrated.

While Benfica would surely accept a lower fee for Vlachodimos, Newcastle may now find it tough to pursue a deal for the 26-year-old with limited funds.

Martin Dubravka will therefore likely retain the number one shirt after the shot-stopper’s superb form last season where he earned Steve Bruce’s side vital points.
