According to Sky Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio, Zenit St. Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel is expected to make a decision on his future today, with the player offered a choice between joining Everton or Napoli.
Witsel, 27, has long been considered as one of the finest midfielders in Europe, having impressed during spells with Standard Liege, Benfica and now Zenit.
This summer, Witsel was the heartbeat of the Belgium midfield at the European Championships, playing a key role as Marc Wilmots’ side made the quarter-finals, before losing 3-1 to Wales on Friday evening.
Witsel bagged the second goal in a 3-0 win over Ireland during the group stage, and his performances in France appear to have triggered major interest in his signature.
The Daily Mail recently reported that both Chelsea and Everton are keen on Witsel, whilst The Mirror claimed on Sunday that Liverpool are entering the race for his signature too.
Now, Sky Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Witsel has offers from two teams – Everton and Napoli – and is expected to decide which team he is joining today.
Everton do already have some talented midfielders, with the likes of Muhamed Besic, James McCarthy and Tom Cleverley at the disposal of new manager Ronald Koeman.
However, with Gareth Barry now 35, Koeman may want to bring in a quality, long-term option in midfield, and Witsel would certainly represent that – but they now have to hope that he chooses Goodison Park over a move to Italy this summer.
