Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly face a battle to keep hold of Mousa Dembele beyond the end of the January transfer window.
It may have surprised some Tottenham fans that the summer window came and went without the Belgian landing a move away from Mauricio Pochettino’s side with The Sun reporting that his contract runs out at the end of this season.
But it appears that he may perhaps still be on his way before he can leave Spurs on a free transfer. The Sun suggests that the CSL side are looking at making a January bid for the 31-year-old – worth between £8 million and £10 million – and are preparing an eye-watering contract offer.
According to The Sun, Roger Schmidt’s side will put a deal on the table that would see Dembele earn £192,000-a-week if he decides to join the current league leaders ahead of the new season in February.
It remains to be seen if Dembele has any interest in making the switch to China at this stage of his career, but the financial terms of the deal will surely appeal to the cultured midfielder if any potential contract talks with Spurs go nowhere over the coming months.
It would be a huge blow for Tottenham to lose Dembele in January. It is very early days in the new season, but Pochettino’s men appear to be in with a fantastic chance of putting a title challenge together having won their opening three league games. They could go top with a dominant win at Watford on Sunday.
Dembele was extremely impressive at Old Trafford on Monday night, and that his display hinted that he could play a key role this term. But, while the recent deadline may have hushed speculation for a short period, it appears that it will not be too long before questions regarding his future surface again with clubs already lurking ahead of January.
