John Stones may have played just 28 times for Barnsley, but the Yorkshire club are reportedly set for a £7 million windfall after his record-breaking move.
John Stones’ record-breaking transfer to Manchester City is set to land former club Barnsley a £7 million windfall, according to the Daily Mail.
Pep Guardiola’s side completed a £47.5 million deal to sign the centre-back from Everton today, making him the most expensive English player of all time.
However, Stones’ move will be celebrated just as vehemently across the Pennines after Barnsley forced through a 15 per cent sell-on clause when agreeing to sell the now 22-year-old (below) to Goodison Park in 2013.
Despite paying just 28 times for the Yorkshire club, the Tykes would stand to inherit a reported £7 million, comfortably surpassing the previous highest fee the club made from a player sale; £4.5 million for Ashley Ward from Blackburn Rovers in 1998.
Last year, QPR received a similar fee when City signed Raheem Sterling (below) from Liverpool for £49 million according to The Guardian, despite the winger never playing a senior game for Rangers.
Also, the Mail report that League One Fleetwood Town may have broken the sell-on fee record if Arsenal had completed their £20 million move for Jamie Vardy (below) earlier in the window, a deal which would have earned the club around five times more than they initially received when they sold the forward to Leicester City for £1 million in 2012.
