The Leeds United youngster is attracting interest from Championship rivals Barnsley according to reports.

According to a report from the Yorkshire Evening Post, Barnsley are interested in Leeds United midfielder Alex Mowatt as a replacement for Conor Hourihane.

The latter completed his move to Aston Villa on Thursday, leaving a big gap in Barnsley’s squad that needs filling.

Leeds' Alex Mowatt scores their second goal

Given Mowatt’s role as something of a fringe player this season, a move in what remains of the January transfer window is not beyond the realms of possibility. However, the YEP claims Barnsley may wait until the summer to make their move; at which point the 21-year-old could be a free agent.

Mowatt’s current Leeds contract expires at the end of the campaign and given his position on the periphery of Garry Monk’s squad – at least in terms of starts – it remains unclear if he will be offered a new deal or be allowed to move on.

If he does leave Elland Road, there will be no shortage of takers for a player who was only recently regarded as one of the best teenagers in the Championship.

Things have not gone quite according to plan since then, although he has plenty of time to get things right.

Whether that is at Leeds, Barnsley or somewhere else entirely, we will have to wait and see, but given his innate talent it is possible Mowatt’s loss would come back to haunt the Whites if he fulfils his potential elsewhere.
