Tottenham Hotspur’s search for a new boss goes on, more than a month after parting ways with Jose Mourinho.
Spurs have been linked with a host of managers of late, and one interesting rumour emerged earlier this week.
Het Belang Van Limburg in Belgium claim that Tottenham have made an offer to Belgium boss Roberto Martinez in the hope of appointing him as Mourinho’s successor.
That news may not go down too well; Martinez’s Everton sides played pretty football but were shaky at the back, and his reign ended poorly after starting so well in 2013.
With Belgium, Martinez has somewhat rebuilt his reputation, guiding them to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018, and they should be one of the favourites at the European Championships this summer.
Martinez would be quite the gamble for Spurs, but they now face shock competition for him with ESPN claiming that Barcelona now fancy Martinez.
Ronald Koeman’s future at the Camp Nou is far from secure, and new president Joan Laporta isn’t entirely sure about keeping Koeman for the second year of his contract.
Catalunya-born Martinez is very close to Jordi Cruyff, who could soon become Barca’s sporting director, and that could help Martinez land a move to the Camp Nou.
Spurs fans may not fancy Martinez all that much, and made that clear in April, but he could instead end up heading to Barcelona in a quite stunning move – and may leave Tottenham going back to the drawing board in the process.
