Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino was said to be interested in bringing the 22-year-old to North London in the summer according to the sources such as the Star and competition to sign the wonderkid is hotting up, with Ernesto Valverde’s Barcelona joining the race for his signature.
Since breaking onto the scene at Schalke in 2013 as a teenager, Meyer has gone on to make 128 appearances for the German side, netting 17 goals in over four seasons, establishing himself as a household name in German football.
Germany boss Joachim Low has rewarded Meyer’s performances at club level too, with the 22-year-old having been capped at every youth level, as well as four times for the senior side.
Meyer is currently in the midst of contract talks with Schalke, with his current contract set to expire in the summer, however, talks have stalled since Spurs’ interest was reported and if Die Königsblauen are unable to tie him down to a new deal come January, Schalke boss Domenico Todesco could be tempted to cut his losses with the youngster.
With Barcelona now reportedly interested, and Tottenham likely to be keeping tabs on a player who is available for free in the summer, the Bundesliga stalwarts may be in a position to conduct a last minute auction for the highly-rated playmaker.
