Barcelona reportedly fear losing out to Liverpool for Matthijs de Ligt.

According to Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona fear that Liverpool will strike with a move for Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt this summer.

Liverpool missed out on the Premier League title despite a stunning season under Jurgen Klopp, but they can still end the season with some silverware given that they are in the Champions League final next month.

The Reds performed a remarkable comeback to beat Barcelona in the semi-finals, and the Catalan giants now seemingly fear being left red-faced by Liverpool once again.

Mundo Deportivo report that whilst Barcelona have made Ajax talent De Ligt their top summer target, they now fear that Liverpool could swoop in.

Barcelona allegedly think that Liverpool will be tempted to pair Virgil van Dijk with his Dutch international teammate De Ligt, and Barca are ramping up their efforts to get a deal done.

Liverpool don’t have a ton of holes in their team, but Klopp could be tempted to land a centre back. Whilst Joel Matip impressed this season, Joe Gomez has suffered more injury problems and Dejan Lovren is…well, Dejan Lovren.

Landing an already unbelievable player in De Ligt, who is just 19, may be a chance to good to pass up. It would be a huge fee required for the centre back, who is already Ajax captain and a regular alongside Van Dijk for the Netherlands.

Barcelona are still favourites to reunite De Ligt with Ajax teammate Frenkie de Jong in Catalunya, but these fears about Liverpool swooping in will be of great interest to Reds fans.
