Tottenham are still set to miss out on the signing of Jules Kounde despite Chelsea dropping out of the race for the French defender as FC Barcelona look to step up their interest in the La Liga star.
According to Sport, the Catalan side are eager to sign the Sevilla centre-back despite reports in England that Tottenham are now favourites to land Kounde following Chelsea’s decision to back away from the 23-year-old Parisian, with the Blues close to securing the signature of Kalidou Koulibaly.
With the Guardian reporting that Todd Boehly is also working on deals to sign Nathan Ake and Presnel Kimpembe, it makes little sense for Chelsea to remain interested in Kounde, who was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham last summer, however, Barcelona appears to be the favourites now for the Frenchman.
As per the report, Kounde is open to a move to Barcelona despite Sevilla valuing their star defender at €90m (£76m), yet given the Catalan side’s perseverance this summer to sign players despite being €1.3bn in debt, it wouldn’t be out of the question for Xavi Hernandez’s side to move for the La Liga talent.
Indeed, Tottenham themselves might feel confident in landing Kounde given their status as a UEFA Champions League team this season and their manager Antonio Conte, but with Barcelona firmly in the race for the Sevilla star, the north London side face an uphill battle to secure the 23-year-old.
Moreover, Spurs have already signed a centre-back this summer in the form of Clement Lenglet, a signing that could free up wage space for Barcelona to sign Kounde, who could earn a similar amount to the on-loan Tottenham defender from Catalonia.
Tottenham should brace themselves for Barcelona to somehow sign Kounde

Barcelona have been an anomaly this year, one of the most financially ruinous sides in all of sports yet somehow able to secure huge transfers without a care in the world, and it’s because of this reckless spending that Tottenham should brace themselves for the La Liga side to somehow sign Kounde.
After all, Barcelona have already managed to secure the signing of Raphinha despite the odds and the interest in other Premier League clubs, and the same could well happen again later this window in Kounde, who Tottenham might miss out on in the coming weeks.
