Leeds United reportedly want midfielder Ander Iturraspe.
According to OK Diario in Spain, Athletic Bilbao won’t be renewing the contract of experienced midfielder Ander Iturraspe.
Basque anchor man Iturraspe, 30, has come up through the famed Bilbao ranks, including his stints with feeder clubs Basconia and Bilbao Athletic.
The midfielder now has more than 300 appearances for the club, starring in the club’s stunning run to the Europa League final in 2012.
A two-cap Spain international, Iturraspe has been outstanding in recent years, but has played just two league games this season, with the last coming in September.
Now, OK Diario report that Athletic won’t be renewing Iturraspe’s contract this summer, allowing him to walk away on a free transfer alongside fellow midfielder Mikel Rico.
Iturraspe’s exit isn’t a huge surprise given his lack of playing time this season, and it may all play into Leeds United’s hands at the end of the campaign.
AS recently reported that Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa wants a reunion with Iturraspe this summer, having made him a key part of his Athletic side seven years ago.
A free transfer would be ideal for Leeds, meaning they wouldn’t have to fork out a transfer fee for a player in his 30’s, and with Bielsa at the helm, a reunion appears to be lining up well with this latest development.
