There’s good and bad news for Aston Villa with regards to signing a centre-back.

Gary Cahill of Chelsea is thrown up in the air by his team mates after the final whistle during the Premier League match between Chelsea FC and Watford FC at Stamford Bridge on May 05,...

The Birmingham Mail has reported that Gary Cahill won’t be re-signing for Aston Villa this summer.

Cahill is a free agent after being released by Premier League giants Chelsea last month.

The 33-year-old defender, who won eight major trophies in West London including the Champions League, began his career with the Villans.

The Sun have previously claimed that Villa boss Dean Smith would be among the suitors willing to bring him back to the West Midlands.

But according to The Birmingham Mail, that’s not going to happen.

The report does add, however, that a move for Tyrone Mings remains on the agenda despite a lack of speculation on the matter.

Mings is a hugely popular figure among Aston Villa fans after helping Smith’s side to Premier League promotion last season, while on loan from Bournemouth.
