Aston Villa are weighing up a bid for Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing, according to The Express and Star.

The 32-year-old was told by Middlesbrough boss Garry Monk that he has no future at The Riverside Stadium on Thursday, according to BBC Sport.

Downing made the switch from Boro to Aston Villa in 2009 and, according to The Express and Star, the Villans are interested in bringing him back to the West Midlands.

The England international fetched a £20 million fee when Liverpool signed from the Villans in 2011 but Steve Bruce would not have to break the bank to get him back.

He has two years to go on his contract on Teeside and Middlesbrough’s willingness to sell him should indicate a minimal fee might be required to get him.

Downing managed a decent 10 goals and 13 assists during his previous two-year spell at Aston Villa, and although he has aged since then, he could still have enough to help Bruce’s side win promotion back to the Premier League next season.

Transfermarkt value Downing to be worth around £3.5 million.
