Aston Villa are reportedly amongst the Premier League sides interested in signing Ben Gibson this summer.

Ben Gibson of Burnley looks on during the FA Cup Fourth Round match between Manchester City and Burnley at Etihad Stadium on January 26, 2019 in Manchester, United Kingdom.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Aston Villa are amongst the group of Premier League sides interested in signing Ben Gibson this summer, with Burnley hoping to offload their £15 million signing.

Gibson endured an extremely disappointing first year at Turf Moor, making five appearances in all competitions including just one outing in the top flight – which ended in a 5-1 defeat to Everton.

He did score that day and was replaced before two of the Toffees’ goals. Nevertheless, the Clarets are reportedly keen to move the former Middlesbrough man on during the coming months.

TEAMtalk reports that the Villans are interested in the 26-year-old, as are fellow Premier League newbies Sheffield United and Norwich City. Meanwhile, Boro and Sheffield Wednesday are also monitoring his situation.

The report adds however, that Gibson – who Burnley are willing to loan out – has little interest in heading back to the Championship, seemingly handing the likes of Villa, the Blades and the Canaries an advantage in the battle for his signature.

Smart move from Villa?

With Axel Tuanzebe and Tyrone Mings returning to their parent clubs at the end of their loan spells, bolstering the defensive ranks surely has to be one of Dean Smith’s main priorities this summer.

And while Mings is the player that finds himself at the top of most Villa fans’ wishlists, Gibson appears to have the potential to be a very good signing for Villa if they can win the race.

He was extremely impressive during Boro’s most recent season at the highest level. And if he did join Villa, it would be little surprise if he was quickly able to put his disappointing Burnley spell behind him.
