Aston Villa are reportedly unlikely to trigger a recall option that would see Tommy Elphick return from his loan spell during the January transfer window.

According to a report from Birmingham Live, it is currently looking unlikely that Aston Villa will decide to recall Tommy Elphick from his loan spell at Hull City during the January transfer window.

After a disappointing spell at Villa, Elphick was given the green light to leave on loan in the summer by Steve Bruce. Despite his struggles however, the move was met by a fairly negative reaction amongst the supporters.

His departure left the Villans desperately short of options at the heart of the defence. And the fans’ frustrations have certainly been vindicated as Elphick has enjoyed a very good spell at the KCOM Stadium.

The former Bournemouth man was named their Player of the Month for October, and their weekend draw with Birmingham was the first time since September that they have conceded more than one goal in a game, with clean sheets coming in the previous two fixtures.

Dean Smith is plotting to strengthen his options at the back during the winter, according to Birmingham Live, and as his parent club have the option to recall Elphick, many may have expected the 31-year-old to come back into the fold. Some are certainly asking for his return.

However, the report goes on to add that Elphick is unlikely to be recalled by Villa.

In fairness to Smith, he may have his eye on his own targets, and the club have kept three clean sheets in his first five games in charge. But perhaps they may go on to rue not bringing Elphick back – if they do decide to leave him at Hull.

He appears to be getting his confidence back and they definitely do not have the options available right now to close the door on the idea of bringing him back in January.
