Joe Lewis only recently signed a contract with Aberdeen until 2020 – but that has not stopped Aston Villa from eyeing up a deal.

It seems that Aberdeen’s remarkable progression into Scotland’s undisputed second-best side is starting to have something of an inevitable adverse effect at Pittodrie.

More and more of The Dons’ star players have been linked with big moves to England in recent times. Speculation surrounding the futures of Kenny McLean and Jonny Hayes, standout performers as Aberdeen finished runners-up in all three domestic competitions last season, intensified over the summer.

And while the former stayed amid links with Birmingham City (Daily Record), the latter eventually signed for Celtic after being targeted by Cardiff City, per the BBC.

Return to the Championship

The Scottish Sun is now claiming that another of Derek McInnes’ stars is a man in demand. Aston Villa are understood to have sent scout Tony Cotton to watch goalkeeper Joe Lewis during Aberdeen’s clash with Hibernian at Easter Road over the weekend.

The 30-year-old impressed once again, keeping his fourth clean sheet in five games to provide the platform for an impressive 1-0 away win.

Lewis has been brilliant for Aberdeen since arriving from Cardiff in the summer of 2016 and was even named in the SPFA’s Team of the Year last season, edging out Celtic stopper Craig Gordon. The 6ft 5ins ‘keeper, who won five caps for England’s Under-21s, is arguably the finest goalkeeper north of the border and has taken his game to a new level since moving to Pittodrie.

Lewis has featured regularly in the Championship for struggling sides such as Peterborough United and Blackpool but was never first-choice at the likes of Cardiff and Fulham.

Villa’s reported interest, however, is a reward for Lewis’ excellent form in the last year-and-a-half. With the goalkeeper only recently signing a contract until 2020, however, it remains to be seen how much Aberdeen would demand for his signature.
