Aston Villa are reportedly planning to make a move to sign Robert Huth after missing out on John Terry.
The Mirror reports that Terry is now set to complete a move to Spartak Moscow after undergoing a medical, despite the Championship side looking to bring the former England international back to the club after a successful one-year spell last season.
The news will undoubtedly be a setback for Steve Bruce. The Villans find themselves in mid-table in the second tier. No team in the top-half boasts a worse defensive record, while only two teams in the division have conceded more than the 11 that Villa have let in so far.
But Terry’s move elsewhere looks set to spur Villa to step up their interest in Huth, who remains a free agent. The Daily Mirror reports that the Premier League winner is set to be approached within the next 48 hours about a move to Villa Park.
Huth will be a riskier signing for Villa. The 34-year-old is slightly younger than Terry, but did not play at all for the Leicester City first-team last season so it may be a while before he is sharp enough to impress for Bruce’s side.
Having said that, Villa’s defensive problems suggest that he may get the chance to build his match sharpness up straight away if he does join as it would probably not be a huge surprise if Bruce decided to throw him into the side almost immediately.
