Aston Villa may have to wait to sign Brentford’s Romaine Sawyers.
According to the Daily Mail, Aston Villa are lining up a £4million deal for Brentford playmaker Romaine Sawyers – but only when the summer transfer window opens.
Villa have already splashed out once in January, bringing Croatian international goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic to Villa Park from Gent.
Boss Dean Smith may still be keen on other additions before the end of the month, and one name recently linked with a move to Villa Park is Brentford’s Sawyers.
The Daily Mail now report that Villa are teeing up a £4million deal to sign Sawyers, but it will have to wait until the end of the season with no deal being done this month.
Brentford seemingly want Sawyers to see out the season at Griffin Park, but then may be willing to grant him a move back up to the Midlands in the summer.
Sawyers, 27, was born in Birmingham and started out with West Bromwich Albion, before working under Smith at Walsall and eventually following him to Brentford.
A Saint Kitts and Nevis international, Sawyers is a skilful and creative midfielder, and a third stint under Smith would be no surprise given their history.
Another attack-minded midfielder may just raise questions about Jack Grealish’s future, but regardless, it seems that Smith will be able to raid his former club come the end of the season, barring a late change of heart with a January deal.
